What is Heartburn?
Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. It can be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or it can be caused by other factors, such as eating certain foods or drinks, or lying down after eating.
Symptoms of Heartburn
The most common symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, which can last for several hours. Other symptoms can include:
- A sour or bitter taste in the mouth - Regurgitation of food or liquid - Difficulty swallowing - Chest pain
Causes of Heartburn
Heartburn is caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including:
- A weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is a muscle that acts as a valve between the stomach and esophagus - Increased abdominal pressure, which can be caused by obesity, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions - Eating certain foods or drinks, such as spicy or fatty foods, or alcohol - Lying down after eating
Treatment for Heartburn
There are a number of different treatments for heartburn, including:
- Over-the-counter medications, such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors - Prescription medications - Surgery
Prevention of Heartburn
There are a number of things you can do to prevent heartburn, including:
- Eating smaller meals - Eating slowly and chewing your food thoroughly - Avoiding certain foods or drinks - Losing weight if you are overweight or obese - Elevating your head and shoulders when sleeping
